Our school is located in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. While we are in an urban area, we believe in incorporating nature to the fullest extent possible and you see evidence of this through our natural playgrounds, community garden, and our recycling program.
Why Go Green? The physical environment of schools has been identified as fundamental problem of education (Sergiovanni 18). Students and staff alike desire order, beauty, aesthetically pleasing and physically comfortable spaces (Sergiovanni 20). Historically, many lower socioeconomic areas have depressed physical environments that leads to feelings of being devalued (Sergiovanni 21). This is one, of many, reasons why we prioritize having a beautiful, rich, environment where students know they are cared about.
More reasons for going green: "A large number of studies have found that schools across the country are unhealthy — increasing illness and absenteeism and bringing down test scores." - Gregory Katz "USGBC said a survey of green school administrators indicates that 70% reported reduced student absenteeism and improved student performance." -DurabilityandDesign.com "Controlling exposure to indoor environmental factors, such as carbon monoxide, dust, and pollen, could prevent more than 65 percent of asthma cases among elementary school-age children." -Center for Green Schools We encourage you to use the links above to learn more about the importance of green schools and how it relates to your child's health and education! |
Join Our Staff!"Caring teachers are always enlightened witnesses for our students. Since our task is to nurture their academic growth, we are called to serve them." -bell hooks (from her book "Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope")
Respect for teachers at Ubuntu Education Center means that we will appreciate your ability to perform, grow, self-sacrifice, and help each other. (Sergiovanni 39)
