What is Ubuntu?
In 2009, Mary Rigan, the director of Ubuntu Education Center, travelled to South Africa to learn about a new culture and tour various schools. What left a longing impression on her was the widespread belief in the concept of "Ubuntu."
Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu believes strongly in Ubuntu and describes it in the following ways:
"Ubuntu is the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality - Ubuntu - you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity." - Tutu Foundation
"We need other human beings in order to be human. I am because other people are. A person is entitled to a stable community life, and the first of these communities is family." -Tutu Foundation
We tie "Ubuntu" into every concept of your child's education. We truly believe in the concept of community and humanity. Our hope is that your child's experience at Ubuntu Education Center will lay the foundation for them to become aware, active, and global citizens who are eager and excited to change the world.
